Project: KeepStock needed to evolve from a scrappy, profitable, but inconsistent and high-touch replenishment service into a true inventory management system. Beginning in Jan 2022 with a deep, forensic look at the current system, my 12 person Transformation “design group” spent 4 months pulling the service apart. We mapped every aspect and dependency and then organized the information and efforts into an ambitious development plan that began in Jan. 2023.

This all needed to be accomplished while continuing to maintain and improve the KeepStock solution being actively used by over 1400 field reps and 13,000 customers

Result: Within 18 months we had built working software across all touch-points. As of Feb. 2024, we had designed and implemented a functioning, end-to-end, multi-platform MVP software suite, installed at one pilot customer site, and are preparing to scale the solution to a new group of customers. This has already resulted in a 20% reduction in on-hand inventory for the pilot customer and notable initial reduction in time-on-task for our field representatives, a significant savings for both the customer and for Grainger.

Project: Cloudlets are discrete modules designed to bring chunks of logic and functionality to the Edge, further improving performance as well as providing capabilities that were prohibitive or impossible using a more traditional model. When I began in 2014 there were two - Edge Redirector and Forward Rewrite - and our challenge was to both expand the Cloudlets functionality ecosystem and to improve the existing interface, which customers actively hated.

Result: By late 2016 we had expanded the suite to nine Cloudlets covering a wide variety of tasks, expanding overall Cloudlets revenue by over 275%; just as important, we had created an entirely new interface of which users approved, allowing them to more intuitively configure and manage Cloudlets within the context of their Akamai digital properties. Along the way I also developed a new statistical tool, Akamai Usability Dyads, which we used for gathering and analyzing survey data on subsequent Akamai projects. Cloudlets - including those original two - are still part of the Akamai product ecosystem.

Project: KeepStock customers were encountering a legacy dependency in our system that allowed unpredictable “free vending” of restricted items. To fix this - and to gain feature parity with an older system, allowing us to transition more customers to our new software - we designed a new tool based on extensive input from our users. This effort both enhanced the functionality and UI for defining limits and restrictions, and created a brand new way for customers to create collections for products for future functionality.

Result: Customers have recaptured and tracked, in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars in previously lost materials, and field reps have regained control over the limits and restrictions of their vend products, with significantly improved consistency and flexibility. It also gave customers an easy and dynamic new way to organize their products, which will support newer planned functionality and scaling.

Project: The Philips AMI (Advanced Molecular Imaging) team needed a new and more engaging way to showcase the technical details of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging for the RSNA (Radiological Society of North America) trade show audience, and to highlight how Philips' new DPC (Digital Photon Counting) technology vastly improved upon the quality of traditional PET imaging. My team created the Exploratorium, a highly configurable multi-user, multi-touch table to highlight the various features and technical details of the technology. Our strategy was to make it simple, attractive, and interactive, and let people explore on their own.

Result: The success of the Exploratorium project far exceeded the expectations of both Philips and our team, and four other teams signed on to have us create custom Exploratorium widgets over the next few years. Based on badge tracking, screen analytics, and direct customer feedback at RSNA, the AMI Exploratorium consistently garnered some of the highest traffic and longest interactions of any exhibit over the course of RSNA. In addition to bringing significant new business to Hyperactive and great satisfaction to our clients at Philips, the Exploratorium was a finalist for a 2014 MITX Innovation Award in Healthcare Excellence.

Project: The Endobarrier team needed a tool to collect a vast number of diverse data points around their proprietary medical procedure. At the time they were still inconsistently using pen and paper and scanning things into Excel files, and after some deep discussion what evolved was a full data ecosystem to support the regular updating of data collected through the new Field Information Tool mobile app.

Result: GI Dynamics was thrilled with the prototype and initial development, which stayed true to their branding and addressed more needs than they initially realized they had. I had just completed the test plan when I parted ways with Hyperactive, but the app launched on iOS shortly after I left, and Android 8 weeks after that. Adoption was swift across the field, and their previously chaotic data archives were cleaned up.
